A Charpy / Izod impact tester measures the energy absorbed by a plastic or metal specimen when it fractures under a sudden impact from a swinging pendulum. The pendulum is raised to a fixed height, released, and strikes the specimen at the bottom of its swing; the energy consumed in breaking the sample is read from the difference between the pendulum's starting and follow-through heights. In the Izod configuration the notched specimen is clamped vertically as a cantilever, while in the Charpy configuration it is supported horizontally as a simple beam and struck behind the notch.
