A coefficient of friction (COF) tester measures the static and kinetic friction between two surfaces โ most often two layers of plastic film, or film against a metal or packaging surface. A sled of standard weight rests on the film and is pulled horizontally at constant speed while a load cell records the force needed to start the sled moving (static friction) and to keep it moving (kinetic friction). The ratios of these forces to the sled weight give the static and kinetic COF.
COF is a critical property for film used on high-speed packaging and form-fill-seal machines: too high and the film jams, too low and reels slip and telescope.
