A density gradient column measures the density and specific gravity of plastics and polymers with high precision. A vertical glass column is filled with a carefully prepared liquid gradient whose density increases smoothly from top to bottom; a specimen dropped into the column sinks to the level where its density matches the surrounding liquid, and its density is read against calibrated float standards. Digital density apparatus based on Archimedes' principle offers a faster alternative for routine work.
