A melt flow index tester configured for film-grade resins measures the melt flow rate of LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE film resins with the fine resolution these lower-viscosity grades require. The molten resin is extruded through a standard orifice under a calibrated load at a set temperature, and the extrudate is cut and weighed (Method A) to give MFR in grams per 10 minutes — the key parameter that predicts how a resin will behave on a blown- or cast-film line.

A shift in melt flow rate signals a change in resin that would otherwise show up as bubble instability, gauge variation or seal problems on the film line.
