Carbon black content testing determines the percentage of carbon black in polyethylene pipe and fittings by pyrolysis. A precisely weighed sample is heated in a muffle furnace or tube furnace in an inert nitrogen atmosphere, which drives off the polymer and leaves the carbon black behind; the residue is weighed and the carbon black content calculated as a percentage. The correct carbon black content — typically 2 to 2.5% — is what gives buried and exposed HDPE its long-term UV resistance.
HDPE water-pipe, gas-pipe and PLB-duct manufacturers must verify carbon black content to ASTM D1603, ISO 6964 and IS 12235 as part of BIS certification and export qualification. Too little carbon black and the pipe degrades in sunlight; too much and mechanical properties suffer. The test is a routine part of pipe quality control.
